Question on XLIFF
Hi,

I'd like to know if XLIFF is a really popular format among the localization/translation community world over.
If any of you have used or are using tools that deal with documents in XLIFF format, I'd like some feedback on the following.

  1. How popular is XLIFF?
  2. Do you think XLIFF is a well defined format for translation?
  3. What XLIFF tools do you use / have you used? What do you like/hate about the tool(s)?
  4. What supporting features would you like to have in your translation tool (like support for Translation Memory. Any others.)?
  5. Do you think there are enough tools for translation that support XLIFF?
  6. Any other thoughts.

I'm asking these questions because I plan to write an Open Source tool for Translation starting with a good XLIFF Editor. I hope to make it simple, intuitive, easy to use and add features as I go. I think I have the right ideas, but I'm not sure. Anyway I thought I should give it a shot.
I tried checking out some tools from this site but I wasn't too sure if that is what is needed.

Thanks!

The Ektron CMS400 (web content management system) uses XLIFF in the translation process of the web content it manages. XLIFF is an established standard, but the market is fairly small. I wish XLIFF were more popular, but it is still not widely known even among people within the GILT industry. XLIFF is well defined and a mature standard, but nothing is perfect. I'm a developer and not a translator, so my use of XLIFF has been in the export (extraction) and import (merge) XLIFF with the CMS. I was not able to get the Sun tools to work. I've used the Heartsome XLIFF editor a little. It is reliable and easy to use.

Thanks for your thoughts.
I checked out swordfish by maxprograms but didn't think it was very intuitive to use. Will checkout the one from heartsome this week.

I see you are a member of the OASIS XLIFF technical committee. If I do manage to get something out, can I send you a link to a video of the tool or the tool itself for you to give your opinion (only if it is not a hassle for you)?

Thanks,

Another question -
The XLIFF 1.2 spec mentions the attributes 'tool' and 'tool-id' for a file element. But the schema at http://docs.oasis-open.org/xliff/v1.2/cs02/xliff-core-1.2-strict.xsd is missing the attribute 'tool' in the file element. Is this correct or am I missing something?

The tool attribute was DEPRECATED in version 1.1. Instead, use the element and a tool-id attribute. The 'strict' schema excludes deprecated elements and attributes. The 'transitional' schema includes them for backward compatibility.

...that should be "Instead, use the TOOL element...". Apparently, this forum doesn't properly HTML encode the message.

Hello Doug,

I've got the first part of the tool that I talked about earlier and I've been working on. The progress has been slow as I've hardly had time to work on it. I'd like to send a video or maybe the tool itself (if it is stable enough) to you, for you to take a look so you can tell me what you think of it. How can I send it to you? Can I email it to you at your email ID mentioned on this page - http://www.oasis-open.org/committees/tc_home.php?wg_abbrev=xliff ?

Thanks!
