Wondrous stuff at the Wanderers

12th March 2006. Australia are touring South Africa. It's the fifth and final ODI of the series at the Wanderers, Johannesburg. Australia pile on a massive target for South Africa to chase - 434. The highest ever total in an ODI.
What does South Africa do? They successfully chase it with one wicket and one ball to spare in an unbelievable run chase!

It will be a while till we ge to see something like this again. We might never see another one.

I started to wonder.
Could any team have done something like this?
Could India have done this?
What does it take to make such a run chase?

I guess the only other team
today that could have done it is Australia.

I don't think India could have done it. Not against a team like Australia. Not even if they were playing at home and they were facing a depleted Australian bowling line up on a flat wicket.

I'm convinced that India has some of the best batting talent. It is a treat to watch people like Sachin Tendulkar, V.V.S.Laxman and Rahul Dravid play some amazing strokes. But I still think they would'nt have done it.

What is it that sets apart teams like South Africa and Australia then? Is it more than just cricketing talent?

Is it their attitude?
Is it the mind set?
Is it what the game means to them?
Is it what they expect from the game?
Is it the environment back home?

Maybe its all of these.
